Figuary Week 3
Drawing challenge days 15-21
Hey-O!
Welcome to Fishing with John, the newsletter that ain't about fishing by a guy that ain't named John.
We are in the homestretch! Figure drawing month week 3 is in the bag and we're cruising in to week four! (Once again, the references from the fabulous daily figure drawing videos from croquis.cafe).
I’ve been continuing to focus on line economy (using as few lines as possible) and rhythm (creating a sense of visual flow) utilizing my “open line” technique. Ultimately, the human body can be effectively represented with a series of sharp angles (bones/joints) curves and straights. From there, and just a matter of determining which of those elements is necessary to effectively communicate what the body is doing. If I have more time, then I can connect the dots with additional lines or shadow. (The rest is gravy.)
This technique is pretty much the opposite of my technique of preference from my early days. The “continuous line“ or “wire mannequin“ technique is great beginners and something I’d still like to use it foreshortening sometimes. Perhaps I should try to provide some examples of that next week?

Welp, it’s been fun! I hope you enjoy my scribbles, and maybe go make a few of the road. Until next time, thanks for fishing with John!
